An Isle of Wight primary school has told parents "abusive, aggressive or threatening" behaviour will not be tolerated, after a traffic warden was assaulted near the site earlier this week.

In a letter to parents, Carisbrooke Primary warned it would not hestitate to ban those acting in such a way from the premises.

It said it will work with police to ensure that the ban is adhered to.

It follows an incident which left a traffic warden injured on Wellington Road on Tuesday (March 29).

A man arrested on suspicion of assault has been bailed until June 28.

A letter from Executive Headteacher, Katherine Marshall, said: "This is not something we do lightly as such a ban means that such individuals are no longer welcome or able to attend the many school events that the children love to take part in, such as class assemblies, sporting events, performances, parents meetings and the many other special events that we organise for the children.

"It also means that they have to make alternative arrangements to drop and collect their child/children to and from school.

"As a school, we teach the children the importance of tolerance, respect and courtesy; values that they demonstrate daily in around the school and hopefully in their life beyond the school gates.

"We also teach the children how to self –regulate and resolve differences of opinion or disputes in a respectful way. As such, we expect that all members of the school community show the same behaviours; as we are all role models to the children."

At the time of the traffic warden assault, the Isle of Wight Council said: “We take abusive behaviour directed at our officers extremely seriously, and council staff should be able to do their job without fear of violence.

“This incident is a police matter and it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.

“We are supporting the civil enforcement officer involved.”

Police said: "We ask people not to speculate and instead report any information you have to police on 101, quoting 44230122556."
