It happened at about 2pm, on the main road through Wootton, leading to disruption on school run buses and a number of public buses through the town.

Most motorists heeded the advice to stay away - which meant busier than normal diversion routes.

Fire crews from Newport and Ryde attended.

Richard Tyldsley, Southern Vectis general manager said: "The driver of the van was injured, and a passenger on the bus was also hurt and attended to by paramedics."

Mr Tyldsley said: "We are monitoring their progress and wish them both a full and speedy recovery.

"Our management team is caring for our driver, who was shaken but doesn’t appear to have suffered any physical injuries.

"The bus was badly damaged, and is being dealt with by our engineers."

The road was closed betwen Tesco Express and Kite Hill for recovery of the vehicles, however Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed it has since reopened.
