TWO people are being taken to hospital following a major crash in Wootton this afternoon (Friday) involving four vehicles.

Police, fire and ambulance crews have all been called to the scene on Kite Hill, opposite The Sloop.

UPDATE: 

Southern Vectis has revealed one of its passengers was injured during the crash.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance also responded, and landed near the Lakeside Park Hotel.

A female is understood to have suffered a leg injury, while the driver of a van — a male — is also en route to St Mary's Hospital.

Police have now confirmed a double-decker Southern Vectis bus, a white VW Caddy, a blue Peugeot 207 and a black Peugeot 206 were all involved in the incident.

The road remains closed, and a number of Southern Vectis bus routes have been affected.

Some traffic is being diverted via The Sloop car park.

Police say the road will remain closed while vehicle recovery is arranged.

UPDATE: A police road block is in place by Tesco Express and traffic is building. 

The Southern Vectis bus is understood to have sustained major damage.

Vehicle recovery is underway. Motorists should take an alternative route where possible if heading through Wootton.

On the Wootton side, vehicles are being diverted via Brannon Way.

UPDATE: 

A spokesperson for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters from Newport and Ryde were called at 1.45pm.

"All vehicles were still on the highway and no one was trapped.

"Crews provided immediate emergency care to two people.

"A further two people were handed into the care of our ambulance colleagues."
