ISLE OF Wight golfing sensation Brandon Robinson Thompson excelled himself on the world stage over the four days of the 151st Open Championships.

The 30-year-old from Totland, making his debut in the event — and his first major — finished 59th with a score of +6 on a hugely testing course, at the Royal Liverpool in the Wirral, and testing conditions, ending yesterday (Sunday).

Brandon made the +3 cut with a stroke to spare after the opening two rounds, completed on Friday, birdying seven holes, in good, but breezy weather.

The weather turned dramatically over the weekend, but Brandon matched the performances of most of the players who made the cut with him — dropping just four further shots and getting just two more birdies.

In the final stages, Brandon beat the likes of 2020 US Open winner Bryson DeChambeau; double Open winner Padraig Harrington; US Open, double PGA and former world number one Brooks Koepka; 2016 Masters winner Danny Willett.

Past major winners who missed the cut included Keegan Bradley, Collin Morikawa, Justin Rose, Charl Schwartzel, Shane Lowry, Darren Clarke, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Justin Thomas,. John Daly and Dustin Johnson.

The prize money for coming 59th was not too shabby either, with Brandon scooping £40,500.

Brandon — who said it was his dream to play in The Open — was supported during the tournament by his partner, who travelled over from the United States, and members of his family, including his grandfather, who taught him how to play golf at Freshwater Bay Golf Club when he was a young boy.
