FRESHWATER'S Brandon Robinson Thompson — believed to be to be the first golfer from the Isle of Wight ever to play in The Open Championships — tees off this afternoon (Thursday).

The 30-year-old, playing in his first major golf tournament — The 151st Open — which attracts the best players on the planet, tees off at 4.05pm.

Brandon will be playing alongside Jorge Campillo and Michael Stewart — the penultimate group to play in the opening round.

Brandon, who goes into the tournament as a 750-1 rank outsider to win The Open, booked his place (one of five available) after finishing second in the Open Qualifiers at Royal Porthcawl in Wales a few weeks ago.

With Brandon in form on links courses in Britain at the moment, and with the opening round producing a number of low scores — with many of the world's top players struggling with the conditions at the Royal Liverpool — in could open up an opportunity to get on the leaderboard.
