It was all smiles for two of the Island's three Wessex League football sides in action today (Saturday).

Newport FC topped the table going into their Division One game against second-placed Andover New Street, in what was expected to be a close encounter.

But it proved to be the complete opposite.

After a fine early, double save from Port goalkeeper Leon Pitman, Newport took the lead through Ryan Hughes, who finished in the bottom lefthand corner of the net.

They doubled their lead shortly afterwards, with Liam Triggs turning in a corner.

A Joe Hancott 'rocket' made it 3-0 going into the break. And an early second-half strike from Connor Kelly put the icing on the cake.

Newport, who have a game in hand, retain top spot by three points.

Final score: Newport FC 4-0 Andover New Street.

In the other game in Division One, it was a difficult day for East Cowes Vics.

They sat 15th ahead of their home match with fifth-placed Downton.

But they found themselves behind in 36th minute when Ollie Davis struck.

And things went from bad to worse just after the 70 minute mark.

Kris Krzysiek doubled the visitors' lead from the spot.

Final score: East Cowes Vics 0-2 Downton.

Defeat leaves Vics in 16th.

Turning to the Premier Division, and Cowes Sports were hoping to continue their recent, fine form.

They went into their clash with Laverstock and Ford in a buoyant mood having thrashed Blackfield and Langley 4-1 in midweek.

The win moved them up two places in the table, to 15th.

And they didn't let an early penalty miss from captain John McKie stop them from picking up where they left off.

Goals from Finn Phillips and Connor Furmidge secured another three points, and moved them further away from the relegation zone, to 14th.

Final score: Laverstock and Ford 0-2 Cowes Sports.
