The Isle of Wight's MP has called on UK Government to help Ukraine in their war against Russia, by giving the country 'the tools to finish the job'.

Bob Seely has said Ukrainian troops should be provided with equipment they can use, including jets, artillery and tanks.

Although he admits the risk of escalation shouldn't be underestimated, he told the County Press "we are right to help them".

His comments come following Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to the UK on Wednesday (8).

Ukraine's president met with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, with reports saying he asked for fighter jets.

Following their conversation, Mr Sunak said "nothing was off the table" when it comes to helping the war efforts.

Russia has told the UK not supply the country with jets, warning of "military and political consequences for the European continent and the entire world".

Mr Seely said: "I believe that the least dangerous course of action is to give the Ukrainians the tools to finish the job.

"President Zelensky’s visit to Britain has, again, reminded us his country is on the front line between freedom and fear.

"President Putin’s war pits openness and democracy versus neo-fascist nostalgia. This war will help define the 21st century."

He said that UK Government needs to focus on immediate practical aid, not training.

"Anything that lengthens this war, equals more deaths and more danger for everyone", he said.

"Ukraine wants their state to be just, open and free. They are right to do so. They are right to defend their nation and their state.

"And we, without being blind to the dangers, are right to help them."

Mr Seely, who sits on the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, has been vocal in his support for Ukraine, and in condemning Russia's actions.

He has visited the country on more than one ocassion since the war broke out, including in September last year.
