A main road through Calbourne on the Isle of Wight has been closed this afternoon (Monday), following a collision which claimed the life of a man and a dog.

Calbourne Road has been shut between its junctions with Betty Haunt Lane and Elm Lane.

The closure is necessary to allow for investigations to be carried out, in the aftermath of a crash last night (Sunday).

As previously reported by the County Press, police were called to a single vehicle collision on Calbourne Road at about 10.10pm.

A blue Mazda 6 collided with a tree, officers said.

The driver of the Mazda, a 42-year-old man from Newport, suffered serious injuries and died at the scene.

His family have been notified and are being supported by specialist officers.

A dog was also in the car and was taken to an emergency vet, but had to be put to sleep due to its injuries.

Police are appealing for information and witnesses.
