A MAN has died following a major fire in Brading earlier this month, the Isle of Wight Coroner’s Court has confirmed.

On December 1, 60-year-old John Kent was taken to hospital after a fire ripped through his house on New Road.

The road through the village was closed for a considerable length of time, and firefighters were called from the mainland to assist with the blaze.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said residents in neighbouring homes were evacuated for safety.

Isle of Wight County Press:

The fire service was initially alerted at 2.30am, and crews from Freshwater, Ventnor, Sandown, Ryde and Newport all attended.

A two-storey, semi-detached house was completely destroyed, and the fire spread to an adjoining roof.

It came within an hour of a barn fire in Bowcombe.

Mr Kent was transported to Salisbury hospital with burns, and his condition was described as stable on the day of the incident, but he has since died in hospital, the County Press can now confirm.

John was a keen dancer, and among those to pay tribute to him was Colin Shaul of BeachRoc Isle of Wight.

In a post on Facebook, he said: "I'm very sad to inform you that John Kent passed away last night, from burn injuries after a house fire on the Isle of Wight.

Isle of Wight County Press:

"May we all pass on our condolences to his family and friends at this sad time.

"John came to BeachRoc every year, and I enjoyed many conversations with him.

"You will be missed, rest in peace, John."
