A Bonchurch resident has spoken of her sadness after packing up her house due to the landslip - but has thanked the community who rallied to help.

Karen Back lost a large part of her Leeson Road garden on Sunday, December 10, and had to evacuate with her two children and their dog.

She can’t return home because the landslip is just feet away from the house, and there are still huge cracks across the remainder of the garden.

Her friends have rallied round over several days to help her move out, and take her belongings to a storage unit.

The family had lived there for 18 years.

Karen said: "I just want to thank everyone, not just those who have physically helped out at the house, but those who have sent messages and kind words, offered accommodation and more.

"It is so heart-warming. It’s the spirit of Ventnor, and we share everyone’s loss of this beautiful part of the Island, it’s not just our house, it’s the Devil’s Chimney and everything around here.

"We have always felt so lucky to live in this beautiful area with all its picturesque walks, wildlife, magnificent views and the wonderful community.

"I feel so well-loved as everyone has been so kind, and I know they are feeling our pain."

Karen thanked in particular her huge team of helpers, Kenny and his team at Page the Packers, and the "kind and considerate" security patrol team who have been looking after Leeson Road residents.
