A 79-year-old man has been arrested — and released with no further action — following a serious crash in Cowes yesterday (Thursday).

A pedestrian — a woman in her 40s was left with potentially life-threatening injuries in the collision.

She suffered serious head injuries, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said.

She has since been named as Gilly Harland, a teacher at Christ the King College. A fundraiser has been set up to help support her family.

The crash also involved a Kia Picanto and happened on Newport Road, near the junction with Smithards Lane, just after 8am.

A witness appeal was subsequently launched, with police appealing for the drivers of a red motorcycle and the driver of a white lorry.

Police have told the County Press a 79-year-old man, from Cowes was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs.

He has been released with no further action, the force said.

The woman was flown to Southampton General Hospital, where she remains.
