Vehicle movements will be restricted at the Isle of Wight's St Mary's Hospital from Monday (4), as the next phase of works to upgrade the site begin.

The entrance to the Children’s Emergency Department is being improved to allow better access for ambulances.

As a new ambulance entrance is being built, it means drivers will not be able to use the hospital site as a through route.

Access to the main car park will be maintained, coming from Parkhurst Road.

Everyone else will need to use the entrances on Dodnor Lane, at the back of the hospital, the Isle of Wight NHS Trust said.

This work is scheduled take five weeks and the diversion will remain in place for this period.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight NHS Trust said: "We apologise for any inconvenience but these temporary restrictions are necessary to ensure the safety of staff, patients and contractors.

"While we know building work can be disruptive for patients and visitors we will always work to ensure this is kept to a minimum."
