Around 400 fish have been saved from an ornamental pond in Ryde following fears for their survival.

Residents raised the alarm earlier this week, after spotting the murky green water, and the County Press asked the Isle of Wight Council what was being done.

The council confirmed there was a pump failure and said it was working with Ryde Town Council on a solution for the pond, which is situated in Ashley Gardens between Ryde Esplanade and The Strand.

Today, Ryde Town Council said: "Our beloved residents of the pond in Ashley Gardens are taking a trip!

"We are working with Sharon and Brian Cooper to give our aquatic friends a temporary home while we restore the pond and install a new pump.

"Rest assured, they'll be back soon, refreshed and ready to make a splash in their upgraded home."

Sharon confirmed on Facebook that 400 goldfish had been removed from the pond.
