There are fears fish in a 'neglected' pond in Ryde will not survive, after the water turned green and the pumps failed.

Residents have raised concerns about the state of the pond, which is based in the gardens between Ryde Esplanade and The Strand.

They say the whole area is a 'mess' and claim action is not being taken quickly enough.

The Isle of Wight Council has confirmed the pond's pump has failed and it is working to 'find a solution'.

Isle of Wight County Press:

Due to a lack of pump, residents fear the water and fish will not get enough oxygen.

One resident said: "I can’t imagine the fish will survive this.

"I used to love this area. There’s bindweed everywhere and this is what the rose garden looks like — the gardens there are sooo overgrown."

Isle of Wight County Press:

It's understood the council has been quoted £900 for a new pump for the pond.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council told the County Press: “There is currently a pump failure on the site which we are aware of.

“We are working closely with Ryde Town Council on a solution and plan to rectify the situation as swiftly as possible.”

The County Press has asked the Isle of Wight Council whether the fish will be moved as a temporary measure.
