A man who tried to rob an NHS worker in a random attack in the car park of the Isle of Wight's hospital has been spared jail.

Nerijus Suminskas, of no fixed abode, appeared at the Isle of Wight Crown Court today (Friday).

He entered a guilty plea to a charge of attempted robbery at the same court last month (January).

The court heard how a woman in her 60s was approached by Suminskas in the North Car Park of St Mary's Hospital, on December 7, 2022.

The 47-year-old grabbed hold of the woman and tried to put his hand in her handbag.

As a struggle ensued, he stood on her left foot, hurting her, the court heard.

He did not manage to steal anything.

Suminskas, who spoke through a translator at today's hearing, was detained by a member of the public — one of two who rushed to the victim's aid having heard her cries for help.

He was later arrested by police, and has remained in custody since.

Jim Osborne, defending, said Suminskas took full responsibilty for his actions and didn't know why he did what he did.

The court was told he had no previous convictions, either in the UK or overseas.

It was revealed how the woman was now very anxious when going to work.

Recorder Malcolm Gibney said Suminskas had "no valid reason whatsoever" to do commit the offence, and his behaviour was not the sort that would be tolerated by the court.

Suminskas was sentenced to 12 months' prison, suspended for two years.

He will also have to carry out 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days and 100 hours of unpaid work.
