A SERIES of road closures remain in place in Newport this afternoon (Monday) following a 'serious collision'.

Police and paramedics have both been called to the scene on High Street, at its junction with St James' Street.

Police have confirmed officers are attending a serious collision on St James' Street, which took place just after 3pm.

"The road has been closed, and we would urge people to avoid the area while emergency services respond," said a spokesperson for the force. 

The whole of Newport High Street has been closed and a cordon is in place.

The County Press has been told a pedestrain has been struck by a vehicle. 

Firefighters were also called to the scene to provide scene safety, and have since stood down.
