An 81-year-old woman has died following a crash in Newport yesterday afternoon (Monday).

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary officers, alongside paramedics, were called to the High Street just after 3pm.

Police said a lorry and a pedestrian were involved in a collision outside the former Carphone Warehouse store, near to the junction with St James' Street.

A woman, from Totland, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Her family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

A 24-year-old man from Bembridge, arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving, has been released under investigation.

Firefighters, from Newport, were also called to provide scene safety.

Cordons were erected around the town and a road closure was put in place from St James' Street, at its junction with Lugley Street, to McDonalds.

Officers are now appealing for dashcam footage.

A spokesperson for police said: "We are appealing for any witnesses to come forward and would particularly like to speak to anyone with relevant dash cam, doorbell or CCTV footage.

"Anyone with relevant information should call 101 quoting reference number 44230020631."

Closures in and around Newport town centre were lifted earlier this morning (Tuesday).
