A FLOOD alert has been issued for the Eastern Yar at Alverstone - but property is not deemed at risk.

The Environment Agency's flood alert service said the water level in the Eastern Yar is high and rising.

In the last 12 hours, 36mm of rain was recorded at Knighton.

From 10am today (Wednesday), water levels will become noticeably high at Alverstone, rising near to the top of the river bank.

Some minor out-of-bank flooding may also occur in fields at Langbridge.

The statement says: "We do not expect access issues to Horringford or impacts at Sandown. Property flooding is not expected.

"Further rain is expected this morning and water levels will rise throughout this time, being generally much higher than normal.

"Rain is expected to clear this afternoon.

"At Alverstone, the river won’t peak until at least 1pm, by which time levels will be very high, right to the top of the river bank, near the main road bridge.

"Drier weather this afternoon and tomorrow (Thursday) will give water levels a chance to recover."

The next update will be at 4pm.

The Isle of Wight still has a hosepipe ban in place.
