A fire has been tackled by firefighters in Arreton this evening (Thursday, July 14), after an electricity pole sent sparks raining down onto a field.

A goose flew into an electricity pole, causing a major power cut in the village.

Further down the power line, sparks started to rain down on the field next to Arreton St George's CE Primary School.

Fire crews from Newport and Shanklin have been tacking the field fire, and thanks to their fast response, the fire is now out.

Chris Fleming, assistant headteacher at Arreton Primary, told the County Press that he was in a govenors meeting which finished at 6pm, and neighbours alerted Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service at 6.30pm.

Mr Fleming would like to thank all the firefighters for their quick work.
