A METAL detectorist has spoken of 'the strangest day' after discovering thousands of live bullets in East Cowes yesterday (Thursday, June 16).

See video of the find below

Mike Denness, who works with the owner of Norris Castle, where the discovery was made, was metal detecting when he started to pick up a signal in two areas close together.

Digging into the hole, Mike started to find the ammunition, counting them out one at a time before finding handfuls and handfuls.

He contacted the police at 8.27am, and officers remained on the scene all day, alongside explosive ordinance disposal teams.

They used a metal detector in the area and excavated some more from the ground.

By the end, 4,000 to 5,000 rounds of old ammunition has been found.

Mike told the County Press: "The strangest day. It was bonkers.

"I was pulling handfuls of bullets out the hole. It was just never-ending.

"It was then that I thought I’d better report it.

"I was digging them out for over an hour, I was originally counting them and then moved on to counting handfuls instead.

"Hopefully next time it will be 4,000 to 5,000 gold coins!"
