METAL detectorists in East Cowes made an unexpected find after locating thousands of rounds of ammunitition this morning (Thursday, June 16).

Police were contacted at 8.27am by Mike Denness, after he found the haul doing some metal detecting in the area of Norris Castle.

Officers remained at the scene all day, alongside explosive ordinance disposal teams.

They used a metal detector in the area and excavated some more from the ground.

Around 4,000 to 5,000 rounds of old ammunition has been found.

The area is now clear and all items have been removed.

Sgt Radford, Isle of Wight Police, said: "If you ever come across anything like this, stop what you are doing, move to a safe distance and call 999."
