An Isle of Wight road which feared red tape would scupper its Platinum Jubilee street has announced the celebrations will go ahead after all.

Last month, the Isle of Wight County Press exclusively reported The Mall in Binstead was going to abandon its plans as bureaucracy threatened to 'stifle the trifle'.

But thanks to extra funding from Ryde Town Council, the bunting will be up as celebrations go full steam ahead this Sunday.

Party organising resident Karen Whitehead feared insurance costs, signage and red tape could put the mockers on flag waving and fun this Jubilee Bank Holiday.

Karen Whitehead said: “As I said before, I think the hoops we had to jump through were excessive and it could have been simpler. We did have a contingency plan, but it wasn’t ideal.

"Thankfully with a bit of help and support, we’ve secured the extra finance to provide the fun for the day.

"This came via our local councillor Ian Dore and Ryde Town Council. It enabled us to get the required elements in place, so we can throw what promises to be a real humdinger of a street party.”
The Mall will celebrate in style with a bundle of activities including trophy presentations, street party commemorative medals, union jack mosaics, food and drink; plus games for the younger residents and neighbours.

Cllr Dore said: “My late gran used to live on The Mall and it’s a superb part of Binstead that I know very well.

"Celebration wise I still have my mug from the 1977 Silver Jubilee, so this is history being made.

"Hats off to Karen and friends for pursuing this party and the community spirit displayed, couldn’t be stronger."
Cllr Dore via Ryde Town Council has also allocated funds to The Church of the Holy Cross for their Jubilee Flower Festival.

That runs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 4pm, with hoopla, hamper raffle, plant sale and refreshments.
