And now he has a new addition — a car he has had his eye on since he was a child.

He said: “I know the Morris Cowley was sold new in December 1925 by Fowlers of Newport, on the Island, to Sir John Simeon Bart of Swainston Manor.

“It was used by the family until some time post-war, when it had its rear body removed and spade lug wheels fitted when it began work being used for ploughing on the estate.

“Although now a farm vehicle, Fowlers continued to service it.

“Island garage owner Barry Price, of Prices Garage, Newport — now in his 80s — remembers working on it at the manor when he served his apprenticeship at Fowlers.

“In 1962, my grandfather, John Ritchie who was a scrap dealer here on the Island, picked it up and took it back for scrap to his yard, Auto Spares, in Pan Lane, Niton.

“It ran so well that he decided not to cut it up, but to put some original wheels back on it and make a box for the rear.

“Later that summer he drove it in the carnival with my mother, Teresa, who was then around five years of age, in the back box.

“My grandfather then sold it for restoration in 1963. It was restored and then later purchased by Robert Stay of Stag Lane Garage, here on the Island.

“Robert is the grandson is one of my best friends. The car stayed at his garage all those years until I purchased it on New Year’s Day of last year.

“It has been stood for some time so it has now undergone a mechanical overhaul.

Edward concluded: “I had known of the car all of my life from pictures and stories, so getting it back in the family is just wonderful.’
