DAILY restocks of fuel means Islanders don't need to panic buy — the Isle of Wight Council is seeking to reassure.

Some petrol stations are experiencing partial closures and occasional full closures as the stocks run dry before the next delivery tankers arrive.

Deliveries across the Island remain at normal levels — but the buying patterns are not — as customers have been panic buying since the weekend.

We spoke to a council spokesperson who said the demand seemed to be curtailing slightly on the Island today.

He said: "Plans for emergency fuel situations have been in place for more than ten years and arrangements exist between the council, blue light emergency services, and a number of filling stations who hold reserve stock for emergencies.

"Agencies will share fuel between themselves if necessary to enable the continuation of critical services and we can curtail non-urgent services if we need to.

"We are not at that stage and the fuel supply chain is still working. We are getting daily supplies of fuel to the Island. Customer demand is what is causing the current situation."

Freshwater Garage, which ran out of fuel on Sunday, told the County Press they were pleased to see their tanker arrive this morning so they could re-stock. They had a queue waiting to fill their vehicles.
