MANY Island petrol stations are closed today after running out of fuel amid the current panic-buying crisis.

Sainsbury's petrol station in Newport remains closed this morning after having to shut yesterday when it ran out of supplies. It is cordoned off completely this morning. Edit: The petrol station has since re-opened.

Morrison's petrol station in Newport has no diesel until tomorrow (Monday).

A sign has been put up outside the petrol station warning customers before they get to the pumps.

We have contacted the Morrison's press office for the latest information on their two stores.

Isle of Wight County Press:

Leslie's Motors had had to close the pumps at Northwood.

They said: "Our fuel station will unfortunately be closed (Sunday) due to high demand.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused. We will be reopening Monday after our delivery."

Sandford Garage told the County Press they will have empty pumps by 9am today.

Gary Jones said: "Our shop will be open but not the pumps. It's gone absolutely mental. We had our usual load delivered as normal but within 36 hours of word getting out on social media it's all gone.

"We had lots of desperate holidaymakers who needed to fill up to get back to the mainland, and we were trying to keep some aside so locals could at least get a tenner's worth."

They are expecting a delivery of diesel tomorrow (Monday) and petrol first thing Tuesday morning.

More to follow.

Sgt Mark Radford of the Isle of Wight Police posted on Facebook this morning: "We have plenty of fuel in the UK but a few companies have issues with transport due to the widely publicised problem of HGV drivers.

"We will be OK, there is no need to panic buy otherwise that will be the cause of any issues.

"I know it is hard to find fuel on the Island at the moment but restocks will be coming.

"I’ve seen a few questions about what the emergency services would do if we ran out of fuel. Supermarket petrol stations, along with others keep a reserve for emergency service vehicles, business will continue as normal for us."

A Morrisons spokesperson said: "It is a rapidly moving situation and we are working hard with our suppliers to ensure we can continue to keep our pumps open and serve our customers."

Freshwater Garage said at 12.30pm: "We are now out of fuel. Hopefully we'll get a delivery Tuesday, but that's not confirmed."

Latest at 3.30pm: We are hearing from readers that Morrisons in Lake has run out of both petrol and diesel.
