Christian Williams spends his life either behind the wheel of a supercar for BOTB or a microphone for Virgin Radio.

In the latest instalment of his monthly motoring column for the County Press, the DJ and ‘most hugged man in Britain’ is hosting his own Olympics!

Christian writes: Had enough of sport after the pelanty heartbreak? I thought not! The oh-that-was-so-near-but-oh-my-goodness-that-was-yet-so-far nature of Englands European Cup mean many people will be carving some British success, so thankfully the Olympics has burst onto our screens to help alleviate the football hangover.

Isle of Wight County Press:

Christian shares his ideas on which cars should win gold, silver and bronze Olympic medals!

Trust me, a summer without any sport would only put more emphasis on our collective footballing heartbreak so it’s time to get involved in some of the other disciplines which don’t involve hitting a target from 12 yards — or missing, more to the point.

Despite the challenging circumstances everyone faces at Tokyo, there’s something hugely impressive about individuals who dedicate themselves to training for an event which happens once every four years.

Whether it’s fencing, or synchronised swimming, or even pistol-duelling, which made its debut in the 1908 Olympics, but failed to last much longer! there’s definitely something for everyone!

Of course, records are constantly being broken inside and outside the sporting arena, whether it’s the world’s biggest sandcastle being constructed in Denmark or my boss Richard Branson heading to the edge of space, giving us all something to aspire to.

But given this is predominantly a motoring column, I thought I would hold my own Olympic-style award ceremony to give you a look at the medallists in some of the most keenly-contested car categories!

There have been some belting vehicles released in 2021 and while our car habits are certainly changing the rise of electric vehicles being the biggest change — in behaviour — there’s plenty of reasons to be joyful!

I’ve decided to go for four categories, with a gold, silver and bronze medal in each one — campers, new launches, SUVs and sports cars!

But there’s also three misses, a metaphor for each of the penalties which didn’t find the back of the net. As you can tell, I’m really over it!

  • Campers:

Gold: VW T6.1 Treago by Bodans — a luxury conversion with wheels to die for.

Silver: Hymer Vision Venture — a mix between a yacht and the Starship Enterprise.

Bronze: Hymer B-Class Supreme Line 708 — big, bold and packed with everything including the kitchen sink!

  • New Launches:

Gold: Lotus Emira — exotic looks (dare we say mini Ferrari) with everyday usability.

Silver: PAL-PAV (Flying car) — ever since we saw the Back to the Future hoverboard we’ve been thinking of travelling like this.

Bronze: Toyota GR 86 — a cracking facelift of an already exciting model.

  • SUVs:

Gold: Audi Q5 — only in its second generation but already a firm favourite in this booming category.

Silver: Jaguar F-Pace — this former Car of the Year has new tech and looks even better than ever!

Bronze: Skoda Kodiaq — an impressive all-rounder and the perfect family motor, especially if you’re carting a new puppy around.

  • Sports Cars:

Gold: Ferrari SF90 Spider — a nigh-on 1,000bhp drop-top? Is it any wonder I love this car. In any colour.

Silver: Maserati MC20 — Maserati is back with this growling, mid-engined drool-fest of a car. The future is in safe hands.

Bronze: McLaren Artura — it’s blisteringly fast, it’s beautiful and it’s a hybrid. What’s not to love?

  • Misses:

BMW 2 Series Coupe: — we loved the old one, but this version has just too many angles and flashes, and we still hate the grille.

Kia EV6: — this looks like it’s taken styling tips from a whole host of other manufacturers, with the end result being quite flat.

Aston Martin Valhalla: — the blurb says the car ‘heralds a new definition’ of the company, but I say it’s everything an Aston shouldn’t be.
