Christian Williams spends his life either behind the wheel of a supercar or a microphone. In a loved-up instalment of his high-octane monthly motoring column for the County Press, the DJ and ‘most hugged man in Britain’ reveals some of his four-wheeled passions.

Christian writes: February is the month of love and while lockdown has put paid to romantic dinners out, chance encounters and blind dates, it can’t stop us reminiscing about the ones that got away…the cars we loved and lost, or held dearly for a short time only for our heads to be turned by a newer, shinier version.

For me, the first car that stole my heart will always be the Peugeot 205 GTi (main image above).

I know a lot of people will have had posters on their walls of a Lamborghini Countach or a Ferrari Testarossa, but Cupid had aimed my arrow in the direction of this incredible 1.9 hot-hatch which blew everything else out of the water in the 1980s.

At the time I could only afford (and insure) a 900cc 205 which was my first-ever car.

In fact, looking back, that decade was packed with incredible pocket-rockets — demonic cars that looked all sweetness and light equivalent of the time, closely followed by the insane Dodge Viper, adored because of its starring role in the Gran Turismo game…all front bonnet and rear wheels! Loud, American, you get the picture!

But while some love runs deep, maturing over the years, I’ve been lovestruck by something new and exciting, the sort of whirlwind romance that’s actually had me reaching for the chequebook.

In many respects I’m practising what I preach as I’ve raved about the Toyota GR Yaris for some months and now I’ve only gone and bought one!!

Isle of Wight County Press: Toyota GR Yaris.

Christian has fallen for the Toyota GR Yaris.

I think the heart started fluttering when I got behind the wheel of the GR Yaris in a drag race alongside Archie Hamilton, where we put it up against a BMW M2 Competition.

And boy was the Toyota impressive. It’s a complete car and so much more involving to drive than a lot of other things I’ve driven.

For starters, 260bhp and it has a few different modes — track, sport and normal. Normal puts the power to the front, track is 50/50 and sport shoves 70 per cent to the rear which makes it a mini rally car.

It’s the most fun you can have for the money and while I’ve owned some pretty meaty cars in the past I must admit I’m looking forward to collecting this one more than most and it seems if you want to order one… you’re looking at summer 2022!

The only downside is there won’t be a suitcase stuffed with cash in the boot, which always happens when I give away cars for BOTB.com!

Excitingly though I’ve been planning filming two more TV adverts for BOTB, even despite being unable to get a haircut thanks to all the restrictions.

I’m thinking of asking my girlfriend to whip out the scissors but the thought of beaming out live to the nation with a buzzcut doesn’t fill me full of confidence.

Not the best start to a Valentine’s dinner for-two either!

Even when I’m away from cars there’s no getting away from romance at Virgin Radio and my shows have been flooded with callers asking for requests — before, during and after Valentine’s Day.

Although radio has changed dramatically in the last decade, the whole request thing has never died. While it’s pretty easy to tell or text someone that you love them, getting it read out on the radio is extra special — that public declaration of love somehow adding an extra level of impact.

It’s the same for newspapers and the sole reason I can tell the world that the Peugeot 205 GTi will always hold a special place in my heart…
