Members of the Isle of Wight Council's planning committee are meeting tonight (Tuesday), to consider the future of stables built by a former council cabinet member.

In a meeting that starts at 4pm, they will be asked to consider giving retrospective permission for the continued use of land for keeping of horses and the retention of a stable block.

It was built last year, by Councillor Clare Mosdell, but was bigger than the original planning permission allowed.

The application calls for the two stables, one with a loose box and feed store and the other with a loose box and tack room, to be allowed to stay.

Each measures 2.6 metres in length, by 7.5 metres in width.

Isle of Wight County Press:

Permission was granted for them in 2020, but they are almost double the originally approved size.

A 40 metres by 20 metres all weather menage area is also proposed, for land north of Wacklands Lane, Newchurch.

As previously reported by the County Press, Cllr Mosdell said what she was originally granted permission for could not be built, due to land levels, run-off water and flooding.

Originally, the plans were to build another stable, to separate the horses due to fighting.

But the block would have been too high for the horses to step into without helo, she said.

However, Cllr Mosdell's neighbour has 'objected strongly', arguing that allowing it will lead to overdevelopment.

He says it will create more water runoff and flooding in his 'best and driest field' and says it will be 'unusable in winter'.

The application is recommended for conditional approval by Isle of Wight Council officers.
