Ongoing roadworks in East Cowes have led to the sudden and substantial loss of parking and a warning for children heading to school in Newport to make sure they have the correct bus stop.

Hundreds of cones were put out overnight, as Island Roads revealed it would need to run two phases of work at the same time, because the three month project is delayed.

This is phase four of work to resurface East Cowes's main route into the town, taking traffic to the Red Funnel ferry terminal, Waitrose superstore, Floating Bridge and major local employer, GKN.

Island Roads is carrying out the work and overnight, hundreds of cones were put out to keep diversion routes clear.

People across the town have taken to social media to say that there is no alternative parking in place and scores of cars have been displaced.

In a letter to residents, Island Roads said: "These cones are in place to keep the diversion route safe and effective.

"We would respectfully ask residents to continue to observe the no-waiting restrictions.

"These temporary no-parking areas are legally enforceable, so you risk getting a ticket if you fail to observe them."

Isle of Wight County Press:

Because work has been delayed, Island Roads is starting phase four of the project before phase three is finished.

It started in March.

The junction of Adelaide Grove and York Avenue will be closed to traffic and diversions will be in place, until June.

Diversion routes have led to damage on quieter roads, due to the number of lorries being diverted.

Deserted Yarborough Road would normally be lined by parked cars

Cones preventing parking have been placed on Clarence Road, Adelaide Grove, Osborne Road, Yarborough Road, Victoria Grove and more.

Island Roads says more spaces will be created on Adelaide Grove, however.

East Cowes Councillor Karl Love is appealing for people with unused driveways and areas suitable for parking to come forward.

He told the County Press: "Parking is already difficult in East Cowes and I have always been concerned about this stage of the highway rebuild of York Avenue.

"There is some unused parking along Kingston Road.

"The Esplanade car park might be used and I did ask Red Funnel for support."

"If you're forced to park away from town, there are electric scooters that might be able to get you home."

For schoolchildren, it will mean having to use a different bus stop.

The Isle of Wight Education Federation, which runs Medina and Carisbrooke colleges, says students should get on the 208, 65, 55 and 5 routes at either The Chapel stop, or Waitrose.

The work will affect the bus stop outside the Frank James Hospital.

Phase 4 of the road works in East Cowes starts today and closes the road between Well Road and Adelaide Grove. This affects the Frank James Hospital stop on the 208, 65, 55 and 5 routes. Students are asked to please make their way to The Chapel Stop or Waitrose.
