A WOMAN has been arrested on suspicion or arson following a fire in a domestic garage yesterday (Saturday).

A 39-year-old woman from Shanklin has been arrested on suspicion of arson and committing an act or series of acts with intent to pervert the course of public justice.

Police were called at 6.50pm yesterday to a report of a garage on fire at Spring Gardens, Ventnor.

A huge multi-agency response saw four fire engines, police and ambulance at the scene.

A police spokesperson said: "A 39-year-old woman from Shanklin who had been inside the garage at the time was located outside of the garage when officers arrived on the scene.

"She was treated at the scene and has since been arrested on suspicion of arson and committing an act/series of acts with intent to pervert the course of public justice.

"An investigation into the exact circumstances of the incident are ongoing.

"Officers will be in the area over the weekend conducting enquiries. If anyone has any questions, please come and speak to us."

The detached garage, which stands alone from a property in Spring Gardens, off Madeira Road, has been cordoned off.

The fire originated from a small bag of rubbish, fire officials said yesterday.

The woman, treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, was taken to St Mary's Hospital in Newport.

She is now in police custody.
