FLOOD alerts have been issued for the Isle of Wight today (Saturday) at Newport's Lukely Brook and with the Eastern Yar rising.

The road between Whitwell and Ventnor is also extremely dangerous and buses are taking alternate routes.

The Environment Agency (EA) says flooding is possible and residents should be prepared.

In the last 12 hours, 10mm of rain was recorded at Wroxall, most of which fell in two hours late last night.

At Alverstone and Langbridge, flooding of low lying land, footpaths and cycle tracks will continue. The EA does not expect property flooding, but the river could be 0.2m higher than recorded yesterday.

By 1pm, onset of flooding to Golf Links and Moreton Common Road will occur, although today's weather should remain fairly dry.

At Alverstone, the river is unlikely to peak until around noon, when it will be near the top of the river bank at the main road bridge. The level should begin to fall by 2pm.

At Sandown, the river won’t peak until midnight.

Further heavy rain is forecast with up to 20mm expected. This rain could cause very high river levels. We continue to monitor the forecast. The EA asks that people remain prepared for further flood impacts this weekend.

The water level in the Lukely Brook at Newport is high and rising, in the last eight hours, 21mm of rain has been recorded at Carisbrooke.

Currently, the river bank is full and may begin to come out of the bank at Hunnycross Way and Vicarage Walk, causing flooding to footpaths.

The EA is not expecting the river to cause impacts at Carisbrooke.

The river will remain very high over the next hour, but levels should begin to fall by around 11.30am.

The EA will work to keep the river free of blockages and continue to monitor the forecast.

Please avoid flooded footpaths at Hunnycross Way.
