EMERGENCY services have been called to Ventnor following reports of a landslide.

Fire and ambulance crews have gone to The Grove to assist after receiving a call at 3.20pm.

An area of earth has slipped, behind a building.

Police have also been asked to attend the scene.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said: "A landslide of earth, approximately 20 metres by 30 metres was reported to us shortly after 3pm.

"Teams from Ventnor, Shanklin, Newport and Ryde are currently in attendance.

"We can not yet confirm if any people have been directly affected."

UPDATE 4.40pm: Two people have been rescued from the first floor of a property, and adjacent buildings have been evacuated.

The emergency services are working at the scene in heavy rain.

A cordon has been put in place, to keep people away from the area.

UPDATE 6pm: A spokesperson for the Fire Service said: "Our teams were stood down at 5.55pm after two people were rescued from the property using a ladder.

"Gas was isolated by SGN (Southern Gas Network) and building control assessed the area, with adjacent buildings safe to re-enter.

"Residents of this property have been left in the care of the British Red Cross Emergency Response team while the the building inspector carries out further checks.

"The area will remain cordoned off until it has been made safe for residents to return."
