The fire is believed to have begun in the separate laundry room, but concern over smoke in the main hotel led to the entire building being evacuated last night.

Fire crews said that the type of room, coupled with the age of the building, means it was likely asbestos cladding was used.

Analysts were called to check for asbestos exposure in the building.

Hotel management worked with the IW Council to rehome the Holliers guests for the night. Channel View Hotel in Shanklin took 39 guests in.

Residents of a house at the back of the hotel was also evacuated.

This morning, crews from Shanklin, Sandown, Ventnor and Newport are on the scene.

UPDATE 8.35am: Ventnor and Newport crews have now left the scene. Shanklin and Sandown remain in place. Church Road remains open to traffic.
