Island Line's maintenance team is shortlisted for an award for excellence at this year's National Rail Awards 2020.

They keep the 80-year-old trains running, between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin, despite significant challenges.

The trains are nearing retirement and an investment package was announced last year to upgrade the Isle of Wight network.

Operator South Western Railway says team members have learned brand new skills and embraced innovation and technology.

London’s Grosvenor House Hotel will host the ceremony in September, when the winners will be revealed by BBC newsreader Huw Edwards.

SWR’s Managing Director Mark Hopwood said: “We are immensely proud of all of our colleagues who have already been recognised by the National Rail Awards.

“Every single day our colleagues go above and beyond in all sorts of ways – from keeping 80-year-old trains running to helping vulnerable youngsters into work.”
