NEWPORT Carnival says it has been forced to abandon its events for 2020 because of coronavirus.

In a statement on social media, organisers said: "We have had to make the decision to cancel this year’s summer carnival season. In light of the current situation regarding COVID-19, it would just not be possible to manage social distancing along the route of the main & illuminated procession.

"We have to ensure the safety of all participants, members of the public attending and those supporting us are safe.

"As much as we would love to be able to carry out this year’s carnival season, it seems this is the only right thing to do.

"Along with our friends from other committees across the Island, it is heart-breaking to make these decisions and not something we take lightly."

Organisers say they hope to stage a Christmas Parade and "will bounce back for 2021."

The event is not the first to fall foul of the pandemic restrictions.
