NEWPORT kept their Wessex League Division 1 play-off push firmly on track, while Wessex Premier sides Cowes and East Cowes both suffered losses on the road in Dorset.
NEWPORT 3, ASH UNITED 1
It was another standout afternoon for the prolific Ji Nash, whose brace secured a hard‑fought win over Ash United at sun‑soaked Westwood Park in Cowes.
Looking to avenge their early‑season defeat, Newport welcomed back striker Jordan Browne to the starting line‑up.
In front of a lively crowd of 175, Port made a blistering start — a stark contrast to recent slow openings — and rattled the woodwork four times in the first 15 minutes.
Ash’s goalkeeper reacted superbly, pushing two efforts onto the post to keep his side level.
But despite Newport’s dominance, it was the visitors who struck first with their very first attack, a freakish shoulder‑high effort looping over Leon Pitman.
The goal unsettled Newport briefly, though Ash rarely threatened consistently in the final third.
Their willingness to push up the pitch, rather than sit deep, left spaces for Newport to exploit.
Player‑manager Joe Butcher was lively, while man‑of‑the‑match Brad Young dictated play from midfield.
It was Young’s defence‑splitting pass that created the equaliser, with Nash taking a superb touch before firing home.
Mikey Thompsett was introduced at half‑time and made an instant impact, heading in Butcher’s corner seconds after the restart.
Newport threatened to kill the game off, but Ash enjoyed spells of possession without troubling Pitman.
Injuries disrupted Port’s rhythm, with Kai Grace, Joe Craig and Neo Lamb all withdrawn.
Captain, Macaulay Watterson, received a heavy blow on his 100th appearance, but returned to finish the match.
Nash wrapped up the points in stoppage time, his driven effort slipping through the goalkeeper’s grasp, keeping Newport seventh with games in hand.
HAMWORTHY RECREATION 3, COWES SPORTS 0
In what was their second league encounter against Hamworthy Recreation in the space of three days, the Yachtsmen again surrendered the three points.
Fielding a much-changed line-up from Thursday's 2-0 home defeat, Cowes Sports conceded in the eighth minute, then again on the stroke of half-time.
It was always going to be an uphill task for the Yachtsmen to turn the tide, and were only kept in the battle, thanks to a penalty save by ex-Vics stopper, Alex Ram, in the 52nd minute.
But Ram was helpless to prevent a second penalty being scored in the 71st minute.
Afterwards, Cowes boss Mark Woodhouse said it was always going to be tough, after cramming four games into the space of a week.
"I'm proud of the boys. Top group of lads. Four games in a week at this level is an incredible ask," he said.
PORTLAND UNITED 3, EAST COWES VICS 0
East Cowes Vics fell to a fifth league defeat in a row, this time away at third-placed Portland United.
Vics went into the game boosted by the return of skipper Liam Newbold and Liam Triggs, but two goals conceded just before half-time, were a body blow to the Islanders.
Despite putting in a lot of effort after the break, a third goal for the hosts sealed the points in the 88th minute.
