Two of the Isle of Wight’s Wessex League sides were in action on Tuesday, March 10, with East Cowes Vics and Cowes Sports both enduring disappointing results.
Both Vics and the Yachtsmen travelled away for their Premier Division action, while Newport saw their trip to Fleetlands fall victim to a waterlogged pitch.
Laverstock and Ford 3-1 East Cowes
East Cowes Vics made the ideal start at Beatrice Avenue but ultimately fell short away at Laverstock and Ford.
The hosts were awarded an early penalty after a handball inside the visitors’ box, and Jake Wright converted from the spot on 11 minutes to put Vics ahead.
They nearly doubled their advantage seven minutes later when Caleb Neale went close in a one-on-one with the Lavvy goalkeeper.
However, the visitors found an equaliser five minutes before the interval to send the sides in level at 1-1.
The second half proved more challenging for Vics.
Laverstock found a second goal on 70 minutes to turn the game around, before Maca Barnes was dismissed after receiving a second yellow card with six minutes remaining.
The visitors sealed the points in the 90th minute with a third goal.
Vics will look to respond on Saturday (March 14) when they travel to mid-table Sherborne Town.
Millbrook 3-0 Cowes Sports
Cowes Sports were well-beaten on their travels at Millbrook, fielding a much-changed side that included debuts for 16-year-old Otto West and new loanee Freddie Milton.
Travelling across the Solent for the Premier Division clash, the Yachtsmen went into the break trailing 1-0.
Despite committed performances across the park, two second-half goals from the home side secured a comfortable victory.
Off the pitch, it was confirmed that Whitecroft and Barton have withdrawn from the IW Gold Cup semi-final, meaning Cowes progress directly to the final.
The Yachtsmen will face Newport, with the date, time, and venue yet to be confirmed.
A club spokesperson said Cowes were “disappointed” to have reached the final in this manner, adding that the club relishes “playing Gold Cup games against Island League teams as it showcases local talent and they are usually great to watch for the neutral fan.”
Instead, Cowes will return to league action on Saturday when they welcome Bemerton Heath Harlequins to Zilch Waste Stadium (Westwood Park).
Newport match postponed
Newport’s scheduled Division One fixture away to fellow play-off hopefuls Fleetlands fell victim to a waterlogged pitch.
The postponement denies Port the opportunity to strengthen their promotion push, but attention now turns to a stern test on Saturday with a trip to Cove.
