UNITED SERVICES PORTSMOUTH 1, NEWPORT 2
The Islanders got off to a superb start, with Kai Grace giving them the lead in the third minute.
And ten minutes later, Newport could have doubled their advantage — Ji Nash put through on goal, only to his effort well saved.
Port came agonisingly close to scoring again on the half hour mark, when Jez Conway turned brilliantly, only to his strike come back off the crossbar.
But Newport's pressure finally paid off with a Neo Lamb header, direct from a corner, five minutes later, to make it 2-0.
Nash was forced off just before half-time with an injury, replaced by Joe Craig.
The hosts almost pulled one back before the interval, hitting the bar.
Ten minutes into the second half, Kudzi Mazambara and Conway had efforts on goal.
It was a nervy end to the game for Newport, after they conceded in the 87th minute — but hung on to record a vital win in their bid to climb into the play-off/promotion places.
