West Wight Sports and Community Centre has opened a new Changing Places toilet, catering to people with severe disabilities.

The facility, registered on the Changing Places network led by Muscular Dystrophy UK, was launched after securing funds from the Isle of Wight Council and Freshwater Parish Council, with the project totaling £53,000.

The facility is more spacious than regular accessible toilets and includes special equipment like a ceiling-mounted hoist, a height-adjustable changing bench and wash basin, and a privacy screen.

Clare Griffin, manager at West Wight Sports and Community Centre said: "We are delighted to have been able to install this Changing Places toilet at our facility as it enables people in the community and further afield to use West Wight Sports and Community Centre.

"This is the only Changing Places toilet in the West Wight and so we welcome anyone who needs to use it.

"There is no requirement to make use of any of our other facilities. We are already a unique establishment with all our amenities being on a single level as well as providing hoist access to both our small and main pools.

"With the addition of this Changing Places toilet, we are pleased to be even more inclusive."
