There was high drama after Cowes Sports won the Isle of Wight Gold Cup final on a penalty shootout.

In front of around 700 fans at Westwood Park, Cowes, a cagey game came to life after an hour when Ollie West was red carded – adjudged to have hauled down Newport’s Joe Butcher in a one on one.

But despite being down to ten men, it was Cowes who took the lead through substitute George Carter-Knight, who slid in a cross from Conner Kelly.

Newport looked to have no way through Cowes until the fifth and final minute of injury time – when substitute Henry West popped up to score to the delirium of the Newport contingent.

Seconds later, with the score at 1-1, the referee blew for full time and penalties.

Butcher had the chance to win it for Newport, but Yachtsmen keeper Ed Hatt saved, and eventually Jimmy Mumford scored the winner to wild celebrations.
