Isle of Wight Wessex League outfit Newport returned to league action tonight (Wednesday).

The Islanders welcomed Clanfield to Beatrice Avenue, after putting high-flyers Alresford Town to the sword at the weekend – a 3-1 win.

After a quiet opening 30 minutes, Newport took the lead through Joe Butcher.

It was a fine strike to break the deadlock, and Newport were well worth that lead going into the break.

The Islanders had chances to increase their advantage early in the second half.

Butcher almost turned provider, but Jordan Browne couldn’t convert.

Subbed on 52 minutes in, Henry West extended Newport’s lead on his returned from injury.

Newport had a few chances to add some further gloss to the scoreline but couldn’t find a third, and the game ended 2-0.
