AN IN-demand event with runners from the Isle of Wight — The Stubbington 10km in Hampshire — is so popular it leaves many who apply to take part, but left out, feeling disappointed.

But thanks to Wight Tri triathlon club volunteer and events co-ordinator, Neil Cooper, those who missed out were invited to take part in a fun alternative, the StubbingNOT 10km social run, at the weekend.

The Stubbington 10km is a traditional season-opening running race, held just across The Solent, which is popular with Island runners and sells out within hours of entries being opened every year.

It's alternative, the StubbingNOT, features no marshals, no timing, no results, no signs and a simple 'out and back' route.

Starting at Yaverland car park, the course took runners to the far end of Shanklin seafront, just short of the Fisherman's Cottage, and back again.

Although it was a Wight Tri initiative, all were welcome, with the event attracting around 70 runners from various Island running clubs, plus several unaffiliated to clubs.

The weather was near-perfect for the time of year — cold, but with bright sunshine and blue sky — but runners had to contend with some headwind on their return.

However, they were welcomed at the finish by the Wight Tri ‘pop up cafe’, which provided hot drinks and cakes.

"With such a huge turn-out of runners, it looks like it could become an annual event," said Neil.

  • The Wight Tri Winter Duathlon Series continues with the East Cowes Duathlon — the fourth this season — which will be held on Sunday.

For Wight Tri members only, competitors should meet at the junction of Columbine Road and Albany Road at 8.15am for a 9am start.

The run-bike-run has a choice of distances and is a nominated time event, so the slowest person could be the winner!
