Two round the word Clipper race skippers from the Isle of Wight are arriving in Newcastle, Australia for a ten day layover, before the next leg of their epic journey around the world.

Josh Stickland, 35 and Max Rivers, 29 are among a group of sailing professionals leading amateur crews into the New South Wales town.

From January 1 to January 10, locals are being invited to take tours of the 70ft yachts, fresh from racing 2,510 nautical miles around southern Australia.

Josh and Max are each in charge of a yacht and a crew, many of who had no prior sailing experience.

The fleet left the Solent in September.

On board Ha Long Bay Vietnam, Josh Stickland was leading the fleet last night (Sunday, December 31), while Max Rivers' Our Isles and Oceans was around 300 nautical miles behind.

On points, the crew of Dare to Lead is in overall first.

Josh has previously been a skipper on the race, while Max was a supporting skipper and has stepped up for the first time. 

Josh Stickland first took to the water aged 10 and with the Prince’s Trust and UKSA’s support, he qualified as a watersports instructor, then a professional sailor.

Max, has a wealth of sailing experience and a degree in adventure education and he has been sailing since the age of 13.

The teams have already passed through Spain, Uruguay and South Africa, as well as Fremantle, Australia.
