All three of the Isle of Wight’s Wessex League clubs were in action this afternoon (Saturday, October 21), with Vics and Port in league action and the Yachtsmen taking on cup competition.

Cowes Sports 7 – 0 Whitchurch United

Premier Division side Cowes faced Division 1’s Whitchurch United at Westwood Park in the Isuzu FA Vase First Round.

Early on, John McKie had the ball in the back of the net, only for the linesman’s flag to delay the incoming bombardment.

Scott Barron found the Yachtmen’s first of the match after a scramble in the Whitchurch penalty area moments before half time.

Amazingly, Cowes put away six goals in the second half through Jez Conway, Liam Triggs x2, John McKie x2 and Ollie West.

The Yachtsmen will look ahead to the FA Vase Second Round but return to Wessex League action next Saturday (October 28) back at Westwood Park against Sherborne Town.

Verwood Town 3 – 3 Newport

Meanwhile, Port travelled to Dorset to take on Verwood Town in the Wessex League Division 1.

Newport got off to a great start, Josh Younie giving the Islanders an early lead, followed by Joe Craig, who made it two before half time.

Port seemingly had one hand firmly holding the three points on 70 minutes when Nicky Vyce opened his scoring account after his summer transfer from Shanklin.

With 20 minutes to hold on, the Islanders fell apart at the back, leaking two Verwood goals and setting up a nervy final ten.

Three minutes from time, Verwood completed the comeback and brought the game back level, cancelling out Port’s three-goal advantage.

Port travel home feeling two points have been lost but have a chance to make amends when they welcome bottom-three side AFC Aldermaston to Beatrice Avenue next Saturday.

East Cowes Vics 2 – 3 Cove

Vics got off to a good start against promotion-hunting Cove, drawing first blood in the 27th minute through attacker Josh Neale.

The Islanders went into the break one up but quickly found themselves pegged back after the start of the second half.

Skipper Callum Chase netted Vics’ second just before the hour mark, but 15 minutes later, Cove levelled it once again.

In the 75th minute, Cove took the lead for the first time in the match and held on to the end, with Vics unlucky to come away empty-handed.

Vics face off against fellow midtable side Fawley AFC and travel across the Solent for a Wednesday night (October 25) kick-off.
