SURFING England has selected talented Isle of Wight teenager Boe Howell to be part of the U16 squad at the 2023 World Junior Surfing Championship, which will take place in Brazil this winter.

The championship will take place in Rio de Janeiro — home to some of the world's most iconic beaches — between November 24 and December 3.

The event will feature the best up-and-coming surfers in the world in what is regarded as the world’s premier competition for junior surfers — and one offering a glimpse into the future stars of the sport.

This what Surfing England said about Boe after selecting her: "She has really dedicated herself over the past couple of years — and this year, really stepped it up a gear, displaying 'sick' surfing over the contest season and earning a third place at the U16s Ripcurl Gromsearch and English Junior National Championships."

Boe, who has her cross-Solent ferry travel sponsored by Wightlink, was ecstatic about the prospect of performing in South America in a matter of weeks.

Reacting on Instagram, Boe said: "Crazy happy to get selected for this. Makes me feel like the 'millions' of ferry journeys have been worth it (thanks @wightlinkferry ).

"Excited to see how much closer surfing, with the best kids in the world, gets me to doing air reverses (my slightly far away absolute dream)."

It will be the second time Brazil has hosted the championship since 2006, when it took place in Maresias, Sao Paolo.

The event will be hosted by the Brazilian Surfing Confederation, the Brazilian Olympic Committee and the State of Rio de Janeiro.
