YOUNG athletes from the Isle of Wight joined forces with counterparts from the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man to compete in the Welsh International Championships in Cardiff at the weekend.

All three contingents comprised to make up an 'Islands' U20 team.

The island team came up against U20s from the Home Nations, as well as England U18 and Welsh schools.

The Isle of Wight's Maisey Kent competed in the 400m and the mixed 4x400m relay race, alongside Jay Spooner.

Naomi Holdsworth competed in both the discus and javelin.

Jacob Patey recorded a personal best in the 400m hurdles, clocking up an excellent 58.20secs, which hoisted him to 26th on the UK ranking list for his age group this year.

He also contested the 110m hurdles.

Not to be outdone, his brother, Noah, smashed his personal best in the 2,000m steeplechase — finishing fourth in his race.

Eddie Chambers was also selected, but sadly he had to drop out through illness.

"We are hoping we will be invited in future years to this prestigious event," said Nick Groocock, who was the athletics team manager for Team Isle of Wight at the recent Island Games.

The team was managed by an Isle of Man coach, assisted by one from Jersey and parents of members of the Isle of Wight contingent.

Guernsey's athletics representative had also extended the scope of the initial invitation to the championships, which was at first handed to the Channel Islands only.
