WIGHT Tri member Laura Curwood made a triumphant return to competitive triathlon racing after a four-year hiatus.

But it was no ordinary event.

Laura competed in the London Triathlon at Docklands, the world’s largest city centre triathlon.

As a para-triathlete, it was her very first event competing against non-disabled athletes.

She got off to a fine start, diving in the Thames and climbing out in 8:39, and was the second participant in her wave to make the transition to her bike.

Weaving along the outskirts of London for around 9k, she beat her personal best, finishing in 21:24.

Thereafter, she embarked upon a 2.5km run, and the final leg took her around the outskirts of the Excel Centre.

Despite a few technical errors toward the end, competing in her pro-racing wheelchair, she finished in 13:47.

With an overall time of 52:14, Laura finished second in her age category, and ultimately 22nd out of 128 non-disabled participants.

“I’m delighted with the result,” said Laura.

“It feels good to be back in the game, and I’ll be back for more next year.”
