EYE-CATCHING performances in an England shirt by Isle of Wight squash talent Amelie Haworth will not have gone unnoticed at the World Team Junior Championships in Melbourne after winning bronze.

In this premier event for junior squash players, Amelie was playing for England at U19 level — the final youth age category before they become seniors — and helped steer them to an excellent joint third finish with the United States.

England defied their fifth seeding, making it a successful tournament for them and something Amelie, 17, who studies at Millfield Senior School, Somerset, trained hard for all season.

Amelie, of Godshill, was part of a team that also comprised Asia Harris (Yorkshire) and Isabel McCullough (Kent), both aged 18, and reserve, Meha Shah (Warwickshire), 17.

England were drawn with the United States, South Africa and Chinese Taipei in their group, losing only to the Americans.

The results placed them second in the group and on to a quarter final against fancied fourth seeds, Hong Kong China.

England defied the odds, producing their very best, with Amelie the star of the show, clinching the final rubber with a quite brilliant performance at the end, when the teams were locked at 1-1.

Amelie hit top form, beating Sze Wing Wai 11-5, 11-7, 11-6.

Their win put them through to the semi-finals, where they lost to title favourites Egypt, who went on to beat Malaysia comfortably in the final.
