MAJOR events happening outside of Isle of Wight Speedway's control with the Nora 92 league have affected this season's race programme at Smallbrook Stadium — but all the better for fans, with at least one extra date to accommodate fresh changes.

The recent news that Plymouth can no longer use its Coliseum Stadium to stage Nora League speedway, due to "unprecedented pressure from the Speedway Control Bureau", has had a knock on effect on how the league will play out this summer.

Although Plymouth will continue to take part in the new look Nora 92 league, alongside the Isle of Wight, Cradley and Sittingbourne, the four rounds of race meetings will be shared between hosts Sittingbourne and Smallbrook.

There will also be an additional Nora League Riders Championship held over two rounds — one at each track.

As a result of the changes, the league has been rebranded — now known as the Nora 92 No Brakes Racing League.

After describing the decision not to use the Coliseum as "massively disappointing", Wightlink Warriors co-owner Barry Bishop said he and business partner, Martin Widman, seek to benefit spectators, riders and sponsors as part of the Nora group.

“The last few days have been frenetic and frustrating," said Bishop, who announced a revised 2023 fixture list for Island speedway fans, amid discussions about the direction the new-look league would take.

"The Wightlink Warriors have modified their fixture list to ensure the very best of entertainment and competition, including four full-team meetings, with trophies on the line, as we continue the drive to bring back clubs on track.

"I can assure our fans, sponsors and riders we will be delivering a full programme, starting on June 22, and I am really pleased to reveal a sidecar meeting (500cc and 1000cc) is planned for Saturday, June 24.”

Nora 92 No Brakes Racing League put out a statement, enthusing about the rebranded event.

"It’s a move we hope will encourage new faces on to the terraces, with a fresh view of racing — as well as plenty of new riders into the pits, especially those who wish to be part of our type of motorcycle racing," a league spokesman said.

The season now runs until Thursday, September 7.
