CONDITIONS for cross-country running were some of the driest in several years — making for some improved times in the 2023 Isle of Wight Cross Country Championships.
Organised as ever by Ryde Harriers, the event was still a big test of character for the 42 runners who completed it.
Joe Wade, of Ryde Harriers, stormed to victory in 39mins 52secs.

The club boasted the top three places, with Gary Marshall second (40.36) and Sam Jacobs third (42.11).
The trio also won the team men’s team competition.
The quickest of the Isle of Wight Road Runners was Ross Wilkes, who came fourth place a second further back.
Wight Tri were well represented in the race, with Rob Johnson coming fifth in 42.40.
The fastest woman was Charis Jones, also of Ryde Harriers (in a Wight Tri top), who finished in (51.13) — beating unattached Amy Chambers by just over 1.30.
Kaitlin Wilson, of the Isle of Wight Triathlon Club, came third in 58.13.
The first Wight Tri athlete home was Lucy Doorly (1.01.00); quickest Wotton Bridge Runners member was Jenny Crowe (1.05.15); and fastest Isle of Wight Road Runners member was Carolyn Littleton (1.08.06).
First junior course athlete was unattached runner, Louis Forster, finishing the race in 24.47secs.
In the women’s team competition, Jones, Debbie Williams and Donna Drobina, of Ryde Harriers, won.
